PARTNERS & FUNDERS

Our steering committee is comprised of eight non-profit organizations with the common mission of contributing more educators and leaders of color to an education system that is suffering from a national teacher shortage. Even as we work together, we are enriched by our differences each organization brings unique perspectives and expertise to the 1MToC campaign. Equally important, each of our organizational missions align with the Campaign’s goal of introducing one million new teachers of color and thirty-thousand school leaders of color by 2030.

STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Center for Black Educator Development

Launched in June 2019, the Center for Black Educator Development is revolutionizing education by dramatically increasing the number of Black educators so that low-income Black and other disenfranchised students can reap the full benefits of a quality public education. The Center seeks to reclaim power and honor the legacy we inherited from those who struggled to commit the deeply subversive, ultimately liberating, act of teaching.

The Education Trust

The Education Trust is a national nonprofit that works to close opportunity gaps that disproportionately affect students of color and students from low-income families. Through our research and advocacy, Ed Trust supports efforts that expand excellence and equity in education from preschool through college, increase college access and completion particularly for historically underserved students, engage diverse communities dedicated to education equity, and increase political and public will to act on equity issues.

The Hunt Institute

Established in 2001, The Hunt Institute honors the legacy of James B. Hunt, Jr., the former governor of North Carolina who distinguished himself as an ardent champion of education.

The Hunt Institute brings together people and resources to inspire and inform elected officials and policymakers about key issues in education, resulting in visionary leaders who are prepared to take strategic action for greater educational outcomes and student success.

Latinos for Education

Since its inception in 2016, Latinos for Education (L4E) has focused on a critical piece of the education puzzle- diversifying the education sector with more Latino teachers, leaders, and advocates. Strengthening the Latino leadership pipeline was envisioned as a critical component of a greater vision that includes increasing the number of Latino advocates. We believe that when committed, representative teachers join forces with parents, policymakers and culturally responsive school and systems-level leaders in an ecosystem of support that extends from the classrooms to boardrooms, educational outcomes for Latino students will improve. Therefore, L4E is working diligently to ensure that Latino students have access to highly effective, diverse, and talented teachers. Latinos for Education is driven by the mission to develop, place, and connect essential Latino leadership in the education sector, while mobilizing Latino voices to promote practices and policies that remove barriers to equitable educational opportunity.

Men of Color in Education Leadership

Men of Color in Education Leadership (MCEL), a national non-profit of educational leaders from across the educational leadership spectrum (current and former school superintendents, C-Suite Executives, school leaders, higher education, and nonprofits) who are hyper-focused on eliminating achievement and opportunity gaps for all students. Based on research and lived experiences, MCEL supports male leaders of color who are uniquely positioned to disrupt current ecosystems, lead through the lens of equity, and serve as critical levers to student success.

New Leaders

New Leaders builds the capacity of equity-minded school leaders who are committed to the success of every child. Our leaders remove barriers to success for underestimated and underserved students, supporting students in fully realizing their futures as the next generation of great thinkers, innovators, and leaders for our society.

Teach Plus

The mission of Teach Plus is to empower excellent, experienced, and diverse teachers to take leadership over key policy and practice issues that affect their students’ success. Since 2009, Teach Plus has developed thousands of teacher leaders across the country to exercise their leadership in shaping education policy and improving teaching and learning, to create an education system driven by access and excellence for all.

TNTP

At TNTP, we are working to disrupt inequities in public education that deny too many Black and Brown students a chance at the lives they want to lead—and we believe recruiting and retaining more teachers of color is one of the most important ways to do it. Studies show that students of color who have teachers of the same race are less likely to be suspended, more likely to be referred to gifted programs, and more likely to complete high school and go on to college. Our own research has found that teachers of color have higher expectations for students of color, and that those higher expectations correlate with more learning. We also know that removing structural barriers keeping so many talented people out of the classroom—and pushing them out of the profession too soon—will create pathways to the middle class for hundreds of thousands more aspiring teachers of color, in addition to the opportunities they will create for their students. We are proud to be part of a coalition fighting to ensure all students get a chance to learn from teachers who share their background and life experience.

OUR FUNDERS

This national campaign would not be possible without the generous support of those with the vision to see the need and benefits of empowering a diverse educator workforce. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of its funders, who in addition to their financial support, serve as an invaluable network of collaborators and thought partners to the coalition, our teams, and educators across the country.

A special thank you to the following organizations for contributing to the Campaign and ensuring the teachers and leaders of tomorrow have the policy, district, and school support they need to excel in their roles.
